Sights and Sounds from Silica Drive…

The last cou [snow day] ple weeks have been packed [snow day] with activity, and a few interruptions due to weather.  Here are a few glimpses of what our kids have been up to.

Our QuizCats have had an historic season, qualifying for a national competition in Atlanta this spring.  Recently, the Quiz Bowl Team defeated Bowling Green 380 – 40, moving their season record to a solid 10-0.  They stand two wins from a potential league title.  These students are busy trying to raise money to fund their trip to Atlanta.  We hope to help with with a Students vs. Teachers Basketball Game on March 23rd.  You can help them by clicking here to purchase a $5 coupon book from Elder-Beerman, from which 100% of the $5 will come back to the QuizCats to help fund their trip.  Best of luck to the team the rest of the way this season!

Mrs. Thiel and her several orchestras performed last week, preparing for their annual Ohio Music Educators’ Association contest.  Check out the brief clip below.

Speaking of orchestra, Nora Gera had the honor of playing at Carnegie Hall recently…

…and Junior Danny Lee performed with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra.

…and many Northview and Sylvania students performed at the OMEA District Honors Concert.

Finally, our All-State musicians performed in Columbus in front of music educators from across the state.

Senior Spencer Johnson was honored by the Sylvania Chamber of Commerce as the February Student of the Month.  Spencer’s involvement in and achievement with so many groups within our performing arts programs puts him in rarefied air.

You will read below what efforts we made to spread love on Valentine’s Day through the Brooke’s Blankets campaign, but our Spanish students did even more, writing cards in Español.

Our Science Olympiad Team has a reputation for being pretty serious about their craft, but they know how to unwind too.  Here, you can see a team dinner, helping them to continue to build bonds as they strive to reach their goals at season’s end.

Mr. Reed started Aerospace Engineering class this week with footage of Elon Musk’s efforts to land a rocket unharmed.  They went on to check their skills on several pieces of industry standard equipment, including the robot in the video below.

The Gymnastics Team competed at the NLL Championships last weekend.  Here, you can see sophomore Jenna Wilkinson perform part of her floor routine.

The defending State Runner-Up Northview Dance Team performed last weekend, and earned the right to return to the State Championships with their performance, which you can see below.

The Cheer Team competed on the same day at Southview, and also earned a spot in the State Championship competition coming up in a couple weeks.  You can see their performance below.

These kids are not sleeping in class, I promise…

the sophomores in the Leadership Academy are using “heads down, hands up” to vote on various service project options for this spring semester.  They ultimately settled on hosting a miniature golf tournament to raise funds to battle hunger and poverty.

Several Northview students traveled to the Pro Football Hall of Fame to hear Hall of Famer Andre Tippett who shared an inspiring message for the Hall’s annual Black History Month celebration.

The Ice Hockey Team has been ranked in the top ten in the state of Ohio most of the season.  The Cats are seeded #2 in the district as we head down the road to the Frozen Four in the coming weeks.  They started the journey with a 5-0 win over BG.  Here are a few game highlights from the end of the regular season, including one from a big win over BG on Senior Night, another from a close loss to SJJ, and finally some interviews with players and Coach Elliot about their hopes for the postseason…

The Wrestling Team competed at the NLLs, and are getting ready for the District Championships next weekend.  Conner Liber finished 2nd, Tucker Garn and Beha Awwad both finished 3rd in their respective weight classes, and Zach McDonald finished 4th.

The growing Bowling Team has wrapped up their 2017-18 season.  The silver team, consisting of Spencer Gallup, Angus Cripe, Keaton Cuneo, and Dylan Fuentes, finished 3rd in their division, while the gold team, including Liam Corcoran, Tyler Kujawa, and Steven Sparks, finished 4th.

The basketball season rolls along, and the boys have only lost two games all season.  Check out some recent game highlights below…

On the girls side, the LadyKats’ Anika Sweeney was named the BCSN’s Burger King Athlete of the Week.

The Kats lost to Springfield at home on Senior Night, but are looking to bounce back against Southview in the first round of the tournament this week.

The basketball and hockey games have given our student body a chance to have a little fun.  Recently, they tie dyed t-shirts, cheered on the players, and earned the BCSN Student Section of the Week title.

All students will have a chance to have some more fun tomorrow night, as our final Fill It Up game will take place tomorrow against Springfield.  Student Council will host a free pizza party in G Hall before the varsity game.  All students who fill up the student section will get a free “Wildcat Mentality” t-shirt.

As the winter season winds down, we reluctantly celebrate another batch of seniors who have put smiles on our faces and given us many thrills over the years.  Endings like these are not something we look forward to, but we will focus our attention and energy on the final stretch runs, and cheer them on at every opportunity.

February NV Parent Organization Meeting: what is “standards based grading” all about?

Looking for a place to spend your Noon hour on Wednesday?  Wondering why one of your child’s classes seems to be assessed in a way that is different from your own experience as a student?  Join us for the February Northview Parent Organization Meeting, and learn about Standards Based Grading from science teacher Lauren Stewart.  We will meet at Noon in the Guidance Office on Wednesday.  Hope to see YOU there!
